How to pose large families in small spaces

Today I’m featuring this large family session and offering some posing suggestions for extended family shoots.  I had a wonderful time photographing this large bunch and I’m excited to showcase some of my favorite images from the session!

How to work with a small space

After posting this family’s sneak peek a couple of weeks ago, I have received quite a few emails from other photographers asking for advice on how to pose large families in small spaces.  I treat extended family sessions the same as I would any other family session.  I have a checklist in my head of what groupings I need and want to capture and I also consult with my clients to confirm which groupings they would like.

My space is a cozy 800 square feet, but my shooting area is less than half of that.  I tell family members to move in close and show connection by holding hands.  After taking a few formal portraits, I ask them to playfully look at someone.  This usually creates natural smiles and sometimes laughter.  In my small space I am limited to sitting and standing poses but you can still achieve variation in your gallery if you capture small scenes that are unfolding naturally in the large group.  Document the details that makes each family special and this will naturally tell a story and show connection throughout the gallery.
