Mom-Tog Diaries| Finding the balance during photography busy season

The work + life hustle

The struggle is real between my home life and running a photography business.  I’m am certainly not saying I have found the perfect balance, because lets keep it real, I have melt downs ((often)) BUT I have learned some ways over the last decade of self employment that might help you during the hustle of photography busy season.  So for all of you that are swamped right now with full and mini sessions I am here to help!

Finding the balance during photography busy season

  • Establish set work hours.  Don’t just declare your work hours in your Facebook bio page, actually stick to them and shut it down as soon as those work hours are over.  This will allow you to be present during non work hours.  After I leave my studio, I don’t open my laptop, check my e-mail or answer my work phone for the rest of the day.  You can also delete your work email off of your phone so you are not tempted to look during off hours.

  • Try to use one or two ways to communicate to clients.  I prefer email and phone.  When I client texts, Instagram DM’s, or Facebook messages me,  I respond via email or phone.  This will help you stay organized with client tasks.  And remember, don’t forget to respond during your normal business hours.

  • Create a list of THREE of the most important tasks that must be completed that day.  We all have lengthy to-do lists in our heads and planners but focus on just three and get them done!  You will feel accomplished and a little more at ease with only a few tasks in front of you.

  • It’s okay to say no.  You don’t always have to say yes to a last minute booking.  There is a big market of photographers out there that perhaps has availability.  Be a kind tog and refer the session out to them.

  • Invest in a client management software like Dubsado.    These programs help keep you organized and offer your client a great experience.    I love Dubsado because you can send contracts, invoices, questionnaires and manage all things for your business in one system.  I highly recommend!
