Baby’s First Birthday Photos

It goes by in a blink! One minute you are preparing for him to arrive and the next you are buying a cake for his first birthday photos and planning his Elmo birthday party! Baby’s first birthday photos are one of my favorite shoots to photograph in my Homer Glen studio. I absolutely love seeing these adorable babies experience their first bite of cake and watch them cover their faces in icing!

This little guy enjoyed his delicious white chocolate mouse cake from Toni’s Patisserie & Cafe in Hinsdale, Illinois and didn’t want to stop eating. I don’t blame him! Aside from being beautiful it was delicious!

There are so many baby’s first birthday photo ideas floating around on Pinterest and Instagram and the possibilities are endless as far as themes and design. Elle Baker Photography studio’s focus is always a simple and modern take on first birthdays and cake smash sessions. Celebrating the baby’s milestones such as taking their first steps, pulling up on a chair, and even clapping along to a song are all big accomplishments during this time in their life and it’s so important to document! It is so easy to forget these small details and it’s important to me to capture these moments for you.

Five cake smash ideas for a photo session!

  1. White cake or naked cakes! A beautiful and simple 4″ – 8″ white cake or naked cake is perfect. It photographs beautifully and provides a modern take on first birthdays. Pro tip ~ I do not recommend chocolate or red velvet otherwise we’ll be photographing little baby vampires!
  2. Large Cookies! A large oversized cookie with a number ONE in the center. Pro tip ~ I recommend white frosting or icing to avoid large messes and skin coloring.
  3. Cupcakes ! A simple white cupcake is perfect for a first birthday cake smash session. I have had many families bring in a homemade or store bought cupcake and it’s simply beautiful!
  4. Donuts! I LOVE donuts myself so I am always happy when parents bring in an assortment of donuts instead of the traditional cake! This idea is fun and festive to celebrate baby’s first year!
  5. Other food items! I have had clients bring in pizza, tacos, pasta, and sub sandwiches for their baby’s first ‘cake smash’. This alternative food option is funny and charming and a great way to celebrate!
