Dear Graduates,
You have always been the light of our lives, but right now, you are the light for the world in this dark and confusing time. Whether it’s teaching us how to use TikTok, delivering groceries to your grandparents, or your dedication to all of your friendships, you are all the reason we have so much hope.
Your bright eyes, and familiar laughs are constantly reminding us to smile, and more importantly, to prioritize fun.
BUT I want to be clear. You are ALWAYS allowed to take moments to grieve what you’ve sacrificed for this crisis.
And you owe it to yourself now, and your future selves to document this time.
Zoom all of your friends write each other hand written notes to super glue in your year books.
Wear your prom dress!
Promise each other that you’ll never lose touch.
Kiss the top of your mom’s head, and remember what her hairspray smells like.
Drive to your Grandma’s house and snap a picture in front of her door with her standing in the background. I promise it will be your favorite picture.
Call your friend and laugh about the first time a teacher heard you swear.
Write your favorite teacher a note explaining how much they’ve done for you. Keep it for yourself as a reminder of how impactful it was to feel like someone believed in you. Pass that feeling on as often as you can.
Walk into your future filled with exact same tools that you’ve shown us how to use.
Be optimistic.
Be authentic.
Protect those that you love.
Teach others how to use things you’ve mastered.
Cherish the relationships you’ve gardened.
Be as confident in yourself as your parents’ are of your future.
HUG AS MUCH AS YOU CAN.
Most importantly, HAVE FUN.
I wish I had more words, or even a silver lining for you.
But the truth is, you have saved us all.
You have reminded us, that if our future is in your hands, we are in the best care.
Congratulations, Class of 2020. You have already changed our lives for the better. It will only get better and brighter from here.
Onward,
xx Laurie
