Hello, and welcome to my blog!  I am Laurie Baker, a family photographer in Chicago, IL and I love the fresh start that comes at the beginning of every year.  The white snow on the ground here in Chicago reminds me that we really do have a clean slate.  Every January I create a list of resolutions and I strive to accomplish them throughout the year.

Twenty eighteen resolutions

My goals are to be present, focus on my health, and respect the journey.

It has taken me a week to curate a list of my goals for this year.  I know I am not as present with my family and friends as I should be.  I go through the motions of ‘the every day’ all the time and sometimes can’t even remember the  conversations I had with the people I was with.  This year I commit to being focused and present today and not constantly thinking about the long list of things I need to do tomorrow.

I have been blessed with a very healthy life.  This year I will focus on mindfulness, appreciation, and respecting the healthy life God has given me thus far.

Respecting the journey when it comes to my work and art is my final resolution.  I am learning something new about this business every day and the path keeps changing.  I know God has a plan for me and for where I am headed, and I just need to trust in the process.

A moment of just being

To me, this image represents a true moment of being present.  While on vacation in Florida, we hired family photographer, Twyla Jones Photography to capture my family on the beach at sunset.  As a photographer, I am always behind the lens and rarely in front of it.  I expressed the importance to Twyla and as a mother and photographer she completely understood the need for these motherhood images.

The sun was almost gone, and we walked into the ocean for a few more images.  There were no distractions around and very little noise.  All you heard was the waves coming in, fireworks going off in the distance, and the clicking of the photographer’s shutter.  It was a moment of just being present.  I will remember this moment for the rest of my life and try to apply this feeling of simplicity to my year.
