Large extended family session including grandparents

I had the best time with this family!  They are such a great group and our session couldn’t have gone any smoother.  This family contacted me for a large extended family session including grandparents in celebration of a 60th birthday!  I absolutely love when large groups contact me especially when they are wanting to document a special event, like an anniversary or birthday.

My favorite images I take during large family sessions are those candid moments in between the posed photos.  You can see genuine interactions, smiles, and connection between everyone.

What to wear?

This is the most frequently asked question I receive when trying to coordinate wardrobe ideas with a large group.  Because everyone has their own personal styles it sometimes makes it difficult to come up with a look that everyone is happy with.

My first suggestion is to find a color palette that everyone loves.  I recommend neutrals simply because most people have some neutral pieces in their closet already.  Colors I recommend are gray, cream, white, black, and tan.  You can always add in a pop of color with a cute scarf, necklace, bangle bracelets, etc.  My second suggestion is to stick with simple clothing, but add in some textures.  Plaid or floral for example are easy ways to get some texture and variation with the looks.  My third suggestion is to figure out what the women of the session will wear first and then follow with the children and men.  I also recommend checking out my Pinterest board ‘what to wear’ for suggestions and inspiration!
