Confessions of a baby-ing mama here. It is time for my five year old (gulp) to stop sucking his thumb. I know, I know, I should have stopped him years ago but if there are any finger sucking baby mama’s out there you will feel me and understand how hard it is to make them stop.
I am not going to lie, I am INSANELY sad about this too. He has sucked his thumb from the moment he was born and it was always the cutest thing. It was his security blanket and so soothing to him. BUT I know it’s time. In fact it was time two years ago according to his dentist.
And so, I purchased the thumbster (in blue of course). It’s actually called the Thumbusters but my older daughter read it wrong when she was opening the package and thumbster stuck. It’s a little mini glove that velcros around his wrist and covers his thumb to avoid the temptation. It worked for about a week until I noticed him keeping it velcroed, but removing the thumb part at night and sucking. Stinker.
So, I purchased Thum, the thumb sucking nail biting treatment. He will probably be mad at me in the future for sharing this, but he was REALLY excited to try nail polish like his sisters. I tried it too and it’s like a mix of bananas and a little bit of the devil mixed in a bottle. I’m not sure why this didn’t make him stop immediately because it is hell-ish. It worked for about 3 days and then he started sucking his OTHER thumb.
This is my last resort friends. I know I shouldn’t lie to my children BUT this is the only thing I can do to help with our future orthodontia bills. Please do not judge me as I’m sure you all have told your children fiblets too. Eh hem, Santa. Just saying. Anyway, this technique worked on my older daughter, so I’m hoping it works for my little guy as well. When she was five and STILL sucking her finger at night, I told her she was starting to get hand, foot, and mouth disease and there were blisters in her mouth. She was very upset about this and stopped sucking her finger cold turkey. There is a little part of me that feels bad about this fiblet BUT her orthodontist said she can get away with 6 months of braces because her teeth are pretty straight! So I’m chalking that one up to a win! Woo hoo! So I guess I will tell him this little lie and HOPE it works!
But for now, I will watch him take a nap and enjoy the last day of the little sucking sounds he makes when he sucks his thumb.
