By definition, ‘lifestyle photography is a style of photography which mainly aims to capture people in ‘real-life’ situations and events or milestones in an artistic manner.’
To me, lifestyle photography is the art of the everyday. My primary goal in every lifestyle session I photograph is to tell stories about that family’s lives. It really is a style of photography that forces you to be patient and wait to shoot at the optimal time.
It has been described as a style somewhere between documentary photography and traditional portraiture. This blend of being a fly on the wall (documentary) and gently guiding them into diverse opportunities (portrait photography) is a beautiful combination of styles. This creates a ‘real life’ storytelling feel to the gallery and allows for a variety of unposed images.
Completely unguided in these images, my son ate his meal and I photographed around him. Spaghetti dinners are always a mess and I know ((one day)) I will miss those sticky noodles on the floor and the sauce everyone around his mouth and even tummy. It is so important that I document my children’s childhood. I have been leaving my camera on my counter lately so I can capture such scenes. I recently photographed my children while they were playing in my garage. Hair a mess, outfits mismatched, but having innocent summertime fun outside. You can see more of this story on a recent blog post.
